The Appalachian State Sustainable Roots Garden is a staple location on the east side of campus.

The area attracts students and community members alike, with its proximity to downtown Boone and the school

Both the App State Beekeeping Club and the App State Gardening Club meet in this space regularly during the warm months of the year

It really is a beautiful space year round.

Recently, however news broke out, that this space was being threatened by possible plans to create more parking.

This news prompted community and student backlash the following days, with many thinking the space was already lost to urbanization

Following the public outcry, The University responded by having a meeting discussing the future of this green space

Garden Manager, Cullen Beasley was nice enough to give his insight into the future of the Roots Garden.

Sean Richards:

"So, what does the future of the roots garden look like."

Cullen Beasley:

"The Roots Garden as of right now is safe in its place. Its definitely not going anywhere any time soon, not this semester, not next semester."

Sean Richards:

"How did the University come to this decision after plans were to pave over the community green space?"

Cullen Beasley:

"It was originally told to the office of sustainability and I that the Roots Garden was going to be paved, and it was likely going to be paved at the beginning of this semester or the beginning of next semester."

Cullen Beasley:

"There were a lot of different channels of communication going a round that might not have been true, or just a misunderstanding from the administration."

"But I believe with outcry of student support behind the Roots Garden, they are now including myself, community members, students, staff, and faculty who have kind of a stake in what happens in the garden."

It Looks like the garden is safe for the time being and if The Roots Garden is relocated it will be done correctly and completely.

I will be strange when this green space is no longer here but the garden as a whole is safe and will be an App State community for years to come.
